What is Civilization?

In my point of view civilization is a mixture of elements related to culture and social contents. For example in history a civilization could be understood as a big group of people that had something specific to do, a special function such being the archer or being in charge or a blacksmith working in a forge. This is meanly organization of people which make you be a civilized society.

Also we can understand civilization as something that has to do with history in terms of not committing same mistakes than before and the development of important areas that a progress involves, for example art, literature, manufacture of buildings and of course technology. This means that in a civilization we will see and implies an advance or evolution of perception of art in terms of the context in which we make this “art”, and how we added it to the epoch we are living in. Ancient buildings for example leave a legacy in the world and it says that we have history and we belong to this olden times in which we have participated before being organized.

I think you could write context instead of content because your are referring a social issues, aren't you?

Also you could write constuction of blildings instead of manufacture of buildings because that word refears that someone works with his/ her hands to do something.

It's a good definition of civilization but you need to pay attention in some specific words. you could improve your writing if you do that.

Nice job!

Hi Salomon,
Your entry is very well structured. You started with a more general definition and went on defining the term from a historical perspective. The fact that you have touched upon the issues of art, old buildings (architecture) and legacy demonstrates a very clear understanding of the importance of history in our present view of "civilization".

Hi Salomón,

The following post corresponds to the presentation that you did in class about "The relationship of Language and Culture".

First of all I have to say that you did a good job presenting your own ideas showing us very good pictures representing them. From my understanding whenever all the factors that you mentioned are together they form part of a culture and of course that language is the most important factor in it in order to create and be part of a culture.

While you were presenting I felt that your ideas were very-well support basically in what the author of the article said. Also, you did pretty good comparisons of how important is to have a language inside a culture and you were capable to demonstrated us through meaningful examples for us. So, I was very interested when you mentioned the comparison of how Chileans and Peruvians have differences teaching the history of the Pacific war, I think that this example was quite good in order to represent how language expresses cultural reality.

The only bad thing that I have to say about your presentation is that from my point of view, you felt a little bit nervous presenting, so sometimes your ideas weren't so clear while you were talking, but you just need to practice in order to feel that you have more confidence presenting in front of people, think about that because you will be a teacher.

To conclude my comments about your presentation I feel that you are very capable to teach, because you organized very well the ideas in order to be empathic with the audience, due to we as your audience supposedly didn't know anything about what you were talking.

I hope that you'll have more opportunities in class in order to improve your weaknesses.

Great job!

Best wishes,

Victoria.

Hey bro, thanks for your comment and it's great that you liked my presentation. I must say the same from yours, you really did a nice presentation and what I liked the most were the examples you gave. The image you showed with the ducks was a clear demostration of what happen because of the difference we find in language depending on the context.

I also think that it was interesting that you made us some questions as you were presenting.

Nice presentation, keep you head up mi bredda.
